Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract Agar with Glycine, Polymyxin B, Vancomycin, and Cycloheximide (BCYE-GPVC) is a selective, non-differential medium for the isolation and presumptive identification of Legionella species. L-cysteine HCl, ferric pyrophosphate and alpha-ketoglutarate provide nutrients required by Legionella species. Activated charcoal decomposes hydrogen peroxide, which is a toxic metabolic biproduct, while also collecting CO2 and modifying surface tension of the media. ACES buffer helps maintain the proper pH for optimal growth.
